Handmaid's Tale / Blogpost #9

I think the Handmaid's Tale left a huge hole in me I feel like. On one hand, I thought the book was amazing and one of a kind. On the other hand, I hate the fact that it has left me wondering what happens next. I feel like we, as a society, do not like things that make us uncomfortable, which is why we like happy endings, or some sort of official ending altogether. The fact that Offred had no choice but to be escorted away by the Eyes to either her salvation or doom, is a really scary thought.

Let's say she got carried away to her salvation. Nick is quite the guy for doing such a thing for her like that in what seems like small bits and pieces of them hanging out, in fear of getting in huge trouble. I guess by the end of this, Nick is probably my favorite male character, just because the rest of them are terrible...

If she got carried away to her doom.... That really sucks. It is almost like her life amounted to nothing. It is almost like she was there to be sacrificed and studied in a different era. Pretty depressing if you ask me.

  1. I really appreciated the unsettling feeling after closing The Handmaid's Tale. My mom hated it, but probably because she is someone that the book targets through its satire of the religious and political views that, in a sense, caused the Republic to be in existence. I think Offred being released to her salvation is a far stretch, though, to be honest... but that's just my own opinion.
The Hulu TV version of the show, though, keeps going with feedback from Atwood-- so if this is something that leaves you really uncomfortable, I'd recommend looking into that. :)
