Beowulf : grendal excerpt(week 2)
In the Grendel excerpt, Grendel is a creature that lives his life
in a cave and seeking a way to understand the world that he lives in. I feel as
though Grendel is resentful and envious of mankind because they get to live
their lives why he lives in the shadows. He feels angry towards God because God
has blessed mankind and he is not. Being the cursed son of Cain sheds a dark
light on Grendel and already portraits him to be an evil character already. In
line 100- 113, he is described " a fiend out of hell", "banished
monster", and " a grim demon". This just goes to show that
god is not on Grendel's side of the story and soon Grendel will face an end to
his reign of terror.
In lines 720-735, I love how the author describes the entrance of Grendel coming and the tone of when he enters to cause destruction " he ripped open the mouth of the building, maddening for blood..", "flames more than light, flared in his eyes". Grendel seems to be enraged in god and also eager to strike. The way they described how happy Grendel was to see the sleeping warriors was kind of demonic and he was picturing the mayhem with a smirk in his face that he would cause in the castle. Grendel kinda thought that he was the most powerful being in the world until he met Beowulf.
In the Grendel excerpt also shows that Grendel is kind of eager to meet Beowulf and battle. Grendel did not really know what to feel when he saw these strangers wash up on his shore. but he kinda felt the excitement in his chest. He did not know whether he should be excited or afraid of these new strangers.
