Beowulf: queens and grendel's mom (week 3)
While reading Beowulf the story cuts to a poem about a great queen named Modthryth. She is described a queen who did "perpetrated terrible wrongs". I think that Modthryth did not commit any wrongs as a strong independent women. She was women who would killed anyone who would look at her the wrong way. Compared to Queen Hygd , who was gentle and very lady-like, and Modthryth was quite the opposite of her. But yet still people appreciated Modthryth's beauty but she "overstepped" her bounds as a queen. Normally, queens are suppose to "weave peace, bot punish the innocent with loss of life", meaning that Modthrthy had no right to punish that man that looked at her. Modthryth kinda reminds me of Cersei from Game of thrones because she is that same strong independent women that will look out for the people that she loves and kills when it is necessary to kill. She is also a ruthless leader that also oversteps her bounds as a queen in the show.
Once Modthryth was married to a brave man named Offa, she was the "tamed" by the man. She changed her ways and she became graceful. Same thing with Grendel's mother we do not see her until her son is killed and she come out to fight. Most of the story you hear about the terror of Grendel coming and killing people. After Grendel dies the mom comes to seek her revenge on the people who killed her son. I think in a way that Grendel was able to take his mother and he does all the evil deeds while she can just chill around.
Some of the other Queens that are shown throughout the were Onela's queen and Weatheow are mentioned in the story. Onela's queen in the beginning has no name and therefor has no meaning to this story and is just bomb in bed. Then as we get farther into the story Hrothgar's queen, Walhtheow, comes in and non of her features are described really in the poem it is just what she is wearing. In lines 620-623, they describe her as a "queenly and dignified.." , and "decked out in rings". Weatheow also seem a hostess as she serves drinks to a mean. In a house hold, it is usually the women who serve and give out drinks to the guest.
