Thoughts on Bitch Planet

As we progress through Bitch Planet, I have to say I really, really don't enjoy reading this book. I realize that the reason I don't like it is because, overall, it just makes me really uncomfortable. I don't like how women are treated in general, but also how this literally contains every stereotype known to mankind about women. The Asian character, of course, built the architecture for the planet, the black character, of course, is the really athletic one, the white girl, is small and can't speak up for herself, and then people just judge the fat girl.

The way that I would describe Bitch Planet is a mixture of the Hunger Games and the novel "1984." It is similar to the Hunger Games because it involves women wrongfully being taken away from their homes and put on this planet to be held prisoner on some bullsh** charge. Not only is the idea of this comparable to the Hunger Games, but also how the guards and the "watchers" (I'm going to call them watchers because I don't exactly know what they are called) seem to have amusement and seem to be entertained by everyone held prisoner and what they do.

It is similar to 1984 to me because of the whole "Fathers" idea. It is all too familiar from the "Big Brother" idea, where he is always watching you. Women in Bitch Planet and people in 1984 all live in fear of this big figure/dictators.

I've never been too intrigued by all the 50 Shades of Grey concept. As a social work major, reading the first book in the series and watching the first movie with my aunt (yes- my AUNT...), all I could think of when I was exposed to that plot was the lack of focus on Christian's real need and outcry for help. In "Bad Feminist: Take One," Gay opens up about her inner quarrels regarding her identification as a feminist. This is something I, too struggled with. At the time, the term was gaining a less than popular connotation, with a minority of the movement taking it upon themselves to spread their isolated belief that women rise above the equilibrium of society; they are superior to men and all men are inherently awful. It is easy to understand, then, why a young girl that does not share these extreme views and stereotypes may not want to be a placed beneath a spot light during such a tense situation, and would subsequently ditch the term. Ditching the term, for me at least, did not mean that I lost my way and would slowly evolve into the submissive, modest, and good woman deemed to be the ideal. Ending of Passing

I was very surprised by the ending of Passing and overall very confused by it as well. I was confused at how unsurprised Clare was by the sudden appearance of her husband and the fact that he had succeeded in discovering her secret. In my mind I had two possible conclusions about this. First was that Clare might have lied to Irene and Brian that John was going to be out of town for work, and might have dropped some hints of where she would be to John. This would make sense then why she was smiling because he figured out her hints and her plan worked as she wanted it to. Clare was making comments at the end indicating that maybe she wasn't as happy in this life as maybe she could have wanted to be. If she was found out by John that would give her the freedom to start a new life without him. This also lends way to the possibility that if Clare and Brian were having an affair that after John found out that they could both move to Brazil together and start a new life. This fits in n...
