Bitch Planet- How Concepts Apply to Real Life(Post #5)
For my fourth forum post, I would
like to address the women’s crimes that placed them on Bitch Planet. I feel it
is important to address what the fact that even though these crimes were completely
dramatized, we could still find much lesser stigmas relating to these crimes in
today’s society. First, In the beginning of the comic when Marian Collins, is
charged because her husband cheated on her. And she defends her husband by
saying she neglected his needs. In modern society this can apply because many
times today women consider their partner cheating on them to be their own
fault. In nursing classes, students are taught that a partner who is abused even
emotionally will defend their abuser until the end. I believe this twisted idea
has come about because since the beginning of time in mass media since the women
are considered the cause to the problems in the relationships. Next, I can especially
see this concept being exemplified through multiple women I know. For example,
when their boyfriend cheats on them, they then blame the girl and themselves when
it actually is their boyfriends fault for being unfaithful. Next, other charges
the inmates are charged with seduction disrespect and etc. Second, this charge
of seduction can also be seen in modern society through ‘slut shaming’. This negative
stigma that when women who are too sexual or as sexual as men are considered lesser
to woman who do not do this. I feel that any concept related to this is
partially because of America’s deeply religious Puritan foundation. In
conclusion, even though many of these concepts are over dramatized, it is
concerning because most of them can, in some way, be seen in today’s society. I
feel that this is the point of comic to embellish the concepts in order to make
a point and have women relate to the issues portrayed in the comic.
